TheRoDent has identified the fix to our dual AMD stagger problem which has renedered our server useless since 29026.

At the console, type: setperfcounterenable(0);

Client stagger goes away immediately!!!

Could someone write a script that autoruns that command.
I hope this works for everyone. Awesomely identified, TheRoDent!!

Seems like something simple creeped it's way into the code. Wouldn't be surprised if it was as simple to fix as that.

isn't raptures server a single processor? I thought they used the same hosting company we do (gaminghost=)and i thought gaminghost moved all their servers to single processor after the last patch?

I really hope it is something this simple.

And if it is, shame on GG for not catching it.

I'm now receiving reports of this fixing the problem on a few other servers too.

The history behind discovering this new console function is here: http://www.teamwarfare.com/forums/showthread.asp?forumid=4&perpage=20&threadid=25294&page=6

Basically what I guess happened is that z&Z may have overwritten one of the scripts that GarageGames changed during the patch, and as a result of that, a certain preference setting having to do with in-game timing got lost. This pref setting would in likelihood have called the setPerfCounterEnable() code to change the way in which T2 does timing on systems which exhibit the stuttering bug.

The console function is still in the tribes2.exe though, so just manually setting it does the job.

I would suggest that all server admins having the stuttering problem put the line:

setPerfCounterEnable(0);

into gamedata\base\autoexec.cs

Many thanks to JimBodSkins too, for guiding my thought process and research, and contributing USEFUL ideas.

Cheers,
TheRoDent.

Just as an adittional note, the stutter is caused by combinations of Motherboard chipsets, and PCI buses. It's not necessarily restricted to dual processor machines, however it seems that dual mobo's more often use these affected chipsets.

Any CLIENT that has this kind of problem when doing hosting on his own PC, might want to try the setting too.

YMMV (Your mileage may vary) though...

Can we get a list of servers that have tried this fix. This way we could go in and try it out. Also shouldnt all servers do this fix even if they do not expierence this issue?

On machines not exhibiting the problem, setPerfCounterEnable(1) will actually provide a higher resolution timer for the game to determine ticks in, but I reckon leaving it at setPerfCounterEnable(0) is probably the safest bet for everyone. It works just as well on 0.
