Seeing as its getting harder to find scrims on the proper maps these days I thought it would be usefull/helpfull to look into one of the most used chat programmas in games as Counterstrike and COD, IRC.

Ok, first of all - what actually is IRC? A quote from mIRC website (www.mirc.com):
What is IRC?
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a virtual meeting place where people from all over the world can meet and talk; you'll find the whole diversity of human interests, ideas, and issues here, and you'll be able to participate in group discussions on one of the many thousands of IRC channels, on hundreds of IRC networks, or just talk in private to family or friends, wherever they are in the world.

Or as Gilgamesh said:
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is not like your ordinary instant messager, instead of being limited to speaking to one person at a time you can either join channels and speak to loads of people at once (like a chatroom) or engage in a private conversation with someone.

So how do you get on IRC? There are alot of different IRC programmes out there but the one most people use is mIRC (downloadable from http://www.mirc.com). After you've downloaded and installed mIRC, you should configure it, for this tutorial I will use the Gamesurge server.

I personally have few scripts for mIRC and in this guide it's NoNameScript. It just looks a bit different, otherwise it doesn't matter in this guide.

When you open the mIRC, the following screen should pop out:

Click the Continue.

Next, there should pop-up the following box (If not, I marked also the spot where you can bring it up manually.):

Still with me? Also, View -> Options brings that box up.
There you're supposed to fill "Full name", "E-mail address", "Nick name" and "Alternative nick".

Next, let's add a IRC server for you.
Don't close that options box; you'll still need it.
Now you're supposed to click "Servers" page below the "Connect" mainpage. There, click add. If you're not riding here anymore, check the pic below:

Now there should be that "Add server" box. Right? Good. Keep following.
Description: Gamesurge IRC
IRC server: http://irc.eu.gamesurge.net
Port(s): 6667
Group: Leave it blank
Password: Leave it blank

Click add, and following screen is up again:

If it doesn't connect with the "irc.eu.gamesurge.net", try next:
To text field type /server serverhere (Replace the "serverhere" with one of the servers in the following link)
http://www.gamesurge.net/servers/?language=English

Now,if you followed me correctly it should connect to GameSurge IRC server now. There should be MOTD and things rolling and then just "nothing is happening". I'd guess you're in the server.
The following picture looks a bit different than yours but don't let it confuse you. Just different back grounds and texts, other wise it's the same mIRC. smile
Next; Let's join a channel. Sounds fun? It is!!! laugh
You have to type next line to the text field:
/join #aascrim , hit "enter".
(also /j should work too... But anyway).
Let's see what happens:
I type it in...

And hit enter:

YAY! I'm in, and even said "Test!". Voilá.

It's very easy, just be careful and you have no reason to throw your keyboard and mouse at the wall!

You can join other channels just by typing: /join #channelnamehere Simple.

Some other channels on Gamesurge:
#aadraft
#aaeurocup
#aaotracker
#aascrim
#twl_aa
#caleague-aa

If you want to register your account, click here.
Your account name doesn't have to be the same how you want to use it on IRC.
After registering your account, you will get a e-mail with all other instructions.
For logging in on IRC server, you have to type to text field: /authserv auth username password
Remember that only one user can be logined with certain account.

If you want to register your own channel on Gamesurge, you need to have Gamesurge account first.
First you need to read the rules.
After that, register your channel here.
Note that you need to describe and explain any abbreviations in the channel name.
Shortly after registering your channel, Channel Server (bot) will join the channel, and you're ready to go.

And at the end, I'll show you something which may look a little bit complicated than other things before, but it will make everything easier for you.
That command is called perform. Every time you join certain server (In our case Gamesurge.), it will process all commands which you typed there. For example; authorizating, joining channels. So you won't have to type everything line by line when you join the server.
How to do this? Piece of cake.
Lets go back to our previous lines. Remember when we were adding the new server? It was something like this:
Next, let's add a IRC server for you.
Don't close that options box; you'll still need it.
Now you're supposed to click "Servers" page below the "Connect" mainpage. There, click add. If you're not riding here anymore, check the pic below:

Now there should be that "Add server" box. Right? Good. Keep following.
Description: Gamesurge IRC
IRC server: http://irc.eu.gamesurge.net
Port(s): 6667
Group: Leave it blank
Password: Leave it blank

Since you have the server now, you will click "Edit" button and just fill "Group" line with "Gamesurge" so it will look something like Group: Gamesurge and click OK.
But don't close this mIRC Options window yet, because we're only on half way done now.

If you don't see the picture, it goes like this: Options-->Perform-->As network you choose All Networks and click on Add-->Choose Gamesurge and click on Ok
If you did everything correctly, new network should appear, called Gamesurge.
So after that, you should fill blank windows with your perform commands. It can be something like that:

Let me explain you all my lines:
/nick sel|element - My name will change to sel|element when I join the server in case if it was different when I last closed mIRC.
/authserv auth nickname password - It will authorize me on Gamesurge server.
/join #aadraft - I will join #aadraft channel - http://www.aaeurocup.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=20
/join #aaeurocup - I will join #aaeurocup channel - http://www.aaeurocup.com/
/join #aaotracker - I will join #aaotracker channel - http://www.aaotracker.com/
/join #aascrim - I will join #aascrim channel - Channel for finding AA scrims really quick.
/join #TWL_AA - I will join #TWL_AA channel - http://www.teamwarfare.com/
/join #caleague-aa - I will join #caleague-aa channel - http://www.caleague.com/
It would be good that you select "Enable perform on connect", so you will do all those performs when you join the Gamesurge server.

Thanks to Gilgamesh and ^iletzu^.

for all the people who never used it so far:

It might looks a bit weird at the start and the guide seems to be very long and complex, but if you would just try it you'd find out it isnt. Within 5 minutes you will have everything set up and be able to talk to a lot of people you see in the forums all day long, including admins from twl and other leagues. It is really easy to find a scrim via IRC so i hope some of you give it a try and create your own channel on IRC as well.

If you want to idle with it, then go ahead, and leave AA open.

start using IRC to find scrims easy and fast! if you find it hard to install and setup mIRC you can use mibbit witch is a web based irc client.

i have it running on http://www.aascrim.eu just pick a username then click on join. couldnt be easier.

if you want your own mibbit client on your site go to mibbit.com
